Prince Rupert Welcomes New Board Member John Farrell

John Farrell, a Prince Rupert resident and business owner with extensive leadership experience in the community, is the newest member of the board of directors of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

Mr. Farrell was appointed by the City of Prince Rupert and the District of Port Edward, effective May 1, 2015. He replaces outgoing board member Maureen Macarenko, who served for more than two years in this locally-appointed role.

Mr. Farrell has lived in Prince Rupert since 2003, and is the owner of Opa Sushi and Cow Bay Café restaurants. For the past four years, he worked as the general manager for Community Futures of the Pacific Northwest.

He is co-chair of the Port Edward Harbour Authority, vice-president of Tourism Prince Rupert, northern director of the BC Ocean Boating Tourism Association, Chair of the BC Fisheries Legacy Trust, and past president of the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce.

The seven-member port authority board includes one appointee each by the federal, provincial and municipal governments and four appointed by the federal government on the recommendation of port users. Members are eligible to serve a maximum of three successive three-year terms and are compensated for their services.

The other board members are Chairman Bud Smith, Jennifer Clarke, Elmer Derrick, Bruce Hallsor and Kenneth Clayton.
