Prince Rupert Port Authority Funds New Playground Equipment

Students at Prince Rupert’s Roosevelt Park Community School/École Communautaire Roosevelt Parc are swinging and sliding with renewed enthusiasm in 2015, thanks to the latest investment from the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Community Investment Fund.

Two years ago, a group of Grade 3 students and parents at Roosevelt worked to develop models for a new school playground structure. The old playground equipment, built in 1998, was nearing the end of its life and much of the wooden support structure was in need of repair. A playground committee formed to consider the students’ input, research playground manufacturing companies, and work with Roosevelt’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) to raise funds.

Following a year of research and fundraising, the Roosevelt Playground Committee presented two playground options to students, staff and parents, who then voted for the winning design. The Playground Committee successfully applied for a BC Community Gaming Grant as well as a contribution of $35,344 from the Port Authority Community Investment Fund.

In addition to providing a dedicated play structure for Roosevelt students before, during and after school, the playground is also heavily used in the evening and on weekends. The playground is used by child care providers, including the Westview Child Care Society, and families of the Prince Rupert Youth Soccer Association, whose members' families hold games at the adjacent field four nights a week and on weekends during soccer season.

"As one of the only parks on the southwest side of Prince Rupert, Roosevelt is a hub of recreational activity for many families in Prince Rupert," said Port Authority President Don Krusel. "We’re proud to support this improvement to not only the quality of education for students of Roosevelt Park Community School, but to the continued health and vitality of the community at large."
