Halifax: New Eimskip Service between Nova Scotia and New England

Icelandic ocean carrier Eimskip is adding significantly more vessel calls at Halterm Container Terminal Limited in the Port of Halifax.

The new service deployment began February 19, when MV Selfoss joined MV Reykjfoss and MV Skogafoss on its "Green Line" service route. The service originates in Rotterdam and calls Immingham (United Kingdom), Reykjavik (Iceland), Argentia (Newfoundland and Labrador), Halifax, and, for the first time, Portland (Maine). The outbound let begins in Portland and continues on to Argentia, St. Anthony (Newfoundland and Labrador), Reykjavik, Immingham, and Rotterdam.

Transshipment gives Eimskip users access to the ports of Hamburg (Germany), Aarhus (Denmark), Halmstad (Sweden), Fredrikstad (Norway), Sortland (Norway), Tórshavn (Faroe Islands) and Scrabster (Scotland).

"As a result of this service enhancement, the number of Eimskip calls in Halifax will increase from 13 to 31 calls per year giving our customers additional options for cargo destined and originating in Europe," said Jeff Simms, Managing Director, Eimskip Canada Inc. "This is good news for our intra-North American customers as well and will provide one more channel for Nova Scotia exporters to move goods into the New England states, acting as a feeder service for the 14 other carriers calling Halifax."

Eimskip, which recently signed a four-year agreement with Halterm, is planning to open a local office in Halifax to support the expanded service.

"Port partners and stakeholders are working hard to grow cargo activity through the Port of Halifax," said Port Authority President Karen Oldfield"This new service enhancement is an excellent example of those efforts paying off. This is good news for the shipper, good news for importers and exporters, and good news for the economy of our region."
