Port of Portland Supports Industrial Jobs Training Program

The Port of Portland and Working Waterfront Coalition presented $20,000 to the Portland Community College Foundation to support scholarships for the Industrial Jobs Training Program. The funds were raised through art sale proceeds from the 2014 Industry & Art program, a juried art exhibition showcasing artwork that celebrates life along the Columbia and Willamette rivers, the people and industries working on our waterfront, and their natural and industrial surroundings.

Artwork from the exhibit was on display at the 2014 Seaport Celebration event, which brought more than 3,600 people to Terminal 4 – a new record for attendance. Approximately 60 paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures were selected for the exhibit. The artwork was available for purchase, and 50 percent of the proceeds went directly to benefit the Portland Community College Industrial Jobs Training Program Scholarship fund.

The artwork consists of 10 large bronze figures, each standing 11½-feet tall and weighing approximately one ton. Each figure has a metal plate covering its mouth, representing the importance of freedom of expression.

"Our Silences" also features a 6½-foot tall steel cube called a "Braille box," which contains smaller scale models of the sculptures that people can touch and feel through openings in its sides.

"The Port of San Diego is extremely honored to host the temporary installment of "Our Silences" on the tidelands," said Chairman Malcolm. "This artwork will draw residents and visitors to the waterfront to enjoy a world-class public art experience and to discover the many wonderful amenities and attractions along San Diego Bay."

The artwork has been exhibited in 14 countries, including Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and Mexico. This is the first time that it has been exhibited in the United States.
