Port Freeport Seals Deal with Höegh Autoliners

Port Freeport announced January 16 it had signed a 10-year contract with Höegh Autoliners. The Oslo-based company is a leading global provider of ro/ro vehicle transportation services with around 60 PCTCs (Pure Car and Truck Carriers). Customers include global manufacturers of new cars, heavy machinery and rolling goods.

According to the port, this new service will add close to 50 full-time stevedoring jobs (those who load/unload the vessels). Another 60 full-time family sustaining jobs will be created by the creation of an automobile processing facility at Port Freeport.

Additional hundreds of indirect, induced and related employment opportunities will be established by ancillary support service providers, such as truckers, fuel, maintenance and repair, food and shelter enterprises, among others.

"Höegh Autoliners represents the second global ocean carrier to commit to Port Freeport in the last six months," said Executive Port Director Glenn Carlson. "With the signing of MSC last October, Port Freeport established itself in the container business with what is considered the number one ranked container carrier. With this successful addition of Höegh Autoliners, Port Freeport is now associated with the number one ranked ro/ro carrier. We have literally opened Port Freeport to the world and a whole new aspect of global commerce."

Sea Star Line Finalizes Agreement to Supply Jacksonville/ San Juan Barge Service

Sea Star Line, LLC has entered into an agreement to lease two barges with combined additional capacity of 800 forty-foot equivalent units (FEUS) for service between Puerto Rico and the Port of Jacksonville.

The weekly barge service, with a barge departing both San Juan and Jacksonville every Thursday, will commence on January 29, 2015 with a six-day transit. The barge is configured to hold dry and refrigerated containers. Sea Star Line says it has on-hired more than 2,100 pieces of equipment to support the additional capacity.

"The new barge service will compliment Sea Star Line's current two vessel calls per week and ultimately act as a bridge until the first of new Marlin Class vessels are delivered in October of this year" noted Sea Star Line President Tim Nolan.

Virginia: Yang Ming Begins Offering Bill of Lading to Port of Richmond

Yang Ming is offering a Richmond bill of lading to the shipping public, both importers and exporters. Any shipper tendering cargo to or from Yang Ming at the Port of Richmond will have access to multiple ports worldwide that are served by the Taiwan-based ocean carrier.

The 121-acre Richmond terminal is located on the west bank of the James River, just south of downtown Richmond, off Interstate 95. The rail-served facility includes more than 1,500 feet of marginal wharf with 22 feet of draft and 300,000-plus square-feet of on-terminal warehouse space. The port has been managed by the Virginia Port Authority since July 1, 2011, under a lease agreement with the city of Richmond (Advisory, June 6, 2011).

"This is another step in expansion and revitalization of the Port of Richmond," said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. "This decision adds to the increasing significance of the barge service that connects The Port of Virginia terminals and the Port of Richmond. This move will pay dividends to our mutual customers, the economic development community and to Yang Ming."

The 64 Express barge service y offers three weekly, roundtrip container-on-barge sailings between Norfolk International Terminals, Virginia International Gateway and the Port of Richmond. According to the port, the barge service effectively eliminates about 15,000 truck trips a year from Interstate 64.

Yang Ming has been calling Virginia’s Hampton Roads marine complex for many years.
