Canadian Transport Minister Lisa Raitt on December 29 joined Marine Atlantic’s President and CEO Paul Griffin, and Cape Breton Mayor Cecil Clarke to tour Marine Atlantic’s new terminal building as it enters its final phase of construction in the Port of Sydney (Nova Scotia).

Marine Atlantic is a federal Crown Corporation and is mandated to provide ferry service year around for passengers and cargo between the island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia. It transports goods, such as food, medical supplies and retail products, as well as people including both resident travelers and tourists. From Sydney, its service departs daily year for Port Aux Basque in Newfoundland. It also operates a seasonal service to Argentia.  During Fiscal Year 2013-14, Marine Atlantic carried 323,352 passengers, 115,243 passenger vehicles and 97,396 commercial vehicles.

The new North Sydney Terminal, estimated to cost C$20 million, includes design, site preparation and construction. It will offer amenities such as a commercial driver seating lounge area and provide closer access to downtown North Sydney businesses.

It is scheduled to be operational by spring 2015.

Funding comes from the federal’s government’s five-year investment in 2010 of C$521 million for the revitalization of Marine Atlantic’s fleet and shore facilities.

Other improvements at North Sydney include a recently completed new building for stevedores, renovations to the docks, an upgraded and expanded marshaling yard, and new Marine Atlantic administration and warehouse facilities.

"This important project for Marine Atlantic will improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of its ferry services, and bring important economic benefits to the region," said Minister Raitt. "This government continues to invest in Marine Atlantic’s fleet and shore facilities, such as the new North Sydney Terminal, because we recognize the importance of connecting the communities, businesses and economies of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador."
