Trois-Rivières Sets Cargo Record in 2014

A record 3.7 million metric tons of cargo was shipped through the Port of Trois-Rivières in 2014, an increase of 37 percent, or 1.0 million tons, from the year before and 400,000 tons more than the previous record, set in 2012.
The Trois-Rivières Port Authority (TRPA) says the upsurge reflects "a strong rise in solid bulk traffic ... particularly grain" to 3.3 million tons. Liquid bulk was unchanged from 2013 at 300,000 tons. General cargo dropped from 152,000 to 127,000 tons despite the emergence of steel as a key cargo for the St. Lawrence River port. During the year, the port welcomed 243 ships, 11 more than in 2013.

Vessel callers in 2014 include three cruise ships carrying a total of 1,796 passengers and 865 crew members. In this same year, the CTMA Voyageur stopped at Trois-Rivières for the first time before continuing on to Cap-aux-Meules, in the Îles de la Madeleine, and AML, a company that offers excursion cruises on the St. Lawrence, began operating in Trois-Rivières.

"What makes these results even more exceptional is the fact that navigation on the St. Lawrence, as well as rail transport, was significantly affected by extreme weather conditions at the beginning of the year," said Port Authority Chairman Cléo Marchand. "But the combined efforts of the TRPA’s handlers, workers, transport companies and service companies enabled an unprecedented recovery which resulted in a record year."

Setting the stage for 2015, the Cypriot-flag bulk carrier M/V Goldeneye became the first international ship to call Trois-Rivières in the New Year without an intermediate stop, arriving January 2 from Algiers (Algeria) to load 28,250 tons of Canadian grain for export.
