Steve Kirkelie, currently deputy city attorney for Puyallup (WA), will be joining the Port of Everett January 5 as chief of administrative and legal affairs. The position was created to fill the legal role vacated with the promotion of Les Reardanz to executive director/CEO in November. The port is not filling the position of deputy executive director at this time.

At the port, Mr. Kirkelie will be responsible for day-to-day legal activities (e.g. real estate, bidding, contracting, etc.). He will also oversee environmental cleanups, environmental reviews and human resources. Brad Cattle with Anderson Hunter Law Firm remains the port’s attorney.

Mr. Kirkelie earned a law degree from Willamette University College of Law and an undergraduate degree in political science (with a minor in journalism) from Western Washington University. He is licensed to practice law in Washington State and the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. He is a member of the Washington State Bar Association and the Washington State Association of Municipal Attorneys.

Prior to working for the city of Puyallup, he served as a municipal attorney and spent a few years in private practice.

Mr. Adams, who is the president and CEO of Adams Building and Consulting Company, LLC, brings to his port authority role extensive experience in construction management, development and general construction. He serves on the Brunswick County Economic Development Commission, the South Brunswick Islands Small Business Alliance, the South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club and the Cape Fear Council Boy Scouts of America Executive Board.

The ports authority board is comprised of the North Carolina Secretary of Transportation, plus six members appointed by the governor and four appointed by the general assembly. The governor selects the chairman and the vice chairman.
