Oakland: October Container Imports up 9%, Biggest Gain in 6 Months

The Port of Oakland reports container cargo imports this October posted their largest increase in six months, jumping 9.2 percent from a year ago to 73,124 TEUs. Port officials said cargo diversions are adding hundreds of additional import containers weekly to Oakland volumes.

"We’re attracting additional import volume by taking advantage of our available capacity," said Maritime Director John Driscoll. "Customers need a way around congestion, and they are beginning to see Oakland as a solution."

The port has undertaken a series of measures in recent years to attract more import volume. They include increased water depth for larger vessels, bigger cargo-handling cranes and outreach to importers and shipping lines.

Total container throughput – in- and outbound loads, plus empties – rose 3.8 percent in October and 1.8 percent year-to-date from comparable 2013 periods, as shown in the attachment.
