Philadelphia Welcomes Its Largest Container Vessel Ever

MSC Judith, the largest container vessel to ever call the Port of Philadelphia, docked at Packer Avenue Marine Terminal on November 17.

The ship, which arrived in Philadelphia from northern Europe, has a length overall of 325 meters/1,065.6 feet, beam of 42.8 meters/140.4 feet, maximum draft of 14.5 meters 47.6 feet, deadweight of 105,017 metric tons and a container carrying capacity of 8,089 TEUs. The operator, Mediterranean Shipping Company, is a regular Philadelphia client.

Packer Avenue Marine Terminal is owned by the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) and operated by Holt Logistics Corporation with labor provided by ILA Local 1291.

"I was very happy to hear that everyone involved in our operations – terminal operator Holt Logistics, our ILA labor force, and our PRPA marketing personnel – all worked together to bring about a smooth, efficient operation while the MSC Judith was in port," said PRPA Chairman Charles G. Kopp. "In the near future, more vessels of this size and beyond will be visiting the Port of Philadelphia due to our current deepening of the Delaware River’s main channel to 45 feet, so it was gratifying to see that we already have the landside chops to handle these large vessels."
