The port authority is a public corporation established in 1942 and charged with developing, promoting and managing Puerto Rico’s maritime and aviation facilities. Its primary maritime asset, the Port of San Juan, is a vast complex of cargo and passenger handling facilities served by a shipping channel with a controlling depth of 36 feet. Traffic in 2012 included 11.1 million short tons of bulk and general cargo, 1.4 million container TEUs, and almost 1.1 million revenue cruise passengers. Other docks are located in the ports of Arecibo, Guánica, Guayama – Las Mareas,  Guayanilla – Tallaboa, and Yabucoa.
