Valparaíso is one of Chile’s oldest, largest and most diversified general cargo ports. Located approximately 60 miles from the nation’s capital of Santiago, the area was first visited by Spanish explorers in 1536. During the 19th century, after the construction in 1810 of the port’s first pier, Valparaiso became a major calling point for ships sailing between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Today, the port consists of a complex of modern cargo and passenger handling facilities with berth depths at mean low water ranging upward to 13.8 meters/45.3 feet, and a 37-hectare/91-acre logistical services zone known as ZEAL (for Zona de Extensión y Apoyo Logístico). Traffic volume in 2013 included nearly 10.3 million metric tons of cargo, 910,780 container TEUs, and 66,588 cruise passengers. Valparaíso is also a major homeport for the Chilean navy.
