Indiana Port Agency Establishes Logistics Scholarship for Hoosier State Students

Ports of Indiana has established a Logistics Scholarship for Indiana high school seniors and college students pursuing their education at a two- or four-year accredited college or university in the state.

Ports of Indiana is the state’s port authority. Headquartered in Indianapolis, it oversees and manages Indiana’s public ports, including Burns Harbor on Lake Michigan and the Ohio River ports of Mount Vernon and Jeffersonville. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student who meets the eligibility requirements and demonstrates an interest, strong connection or specific accomplishment in a transportation or logistics field. The scholarship must be applied to tuition, fees, books and other qualified educational expenses.

"With our rich history in manufacturing and reputation as the 'Crossroads of America,' logistics is a growing field of study and opportunity for young people here in Indiana," said Rich Cooper, CEO for the Ports of Indiana. "We are excited to offer the Ports of Indiana Logistics Scholarship as a way to recognize outstanding high school students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a strong interest in logistics. It is our hope that these students will acquire the necessary skills in their postsecondary education to make a significant contribution to Indiana businesses upon graduation."

For students attending or planning to attend Vincennes University, a matching award is also available. Vincennes University has committed to matching the student scholarship award from the Ports of Indiana up to $1,000 for students who are enrolled in and/or accepted into Vincennes University and meet the basic eligibility requirements of their scholarship program.

The recipient of the inaugural scholarship will be announced at the 2014 Indiana Logistics Summit on Oct. 8 in Indianapolis. The winner will be recognized during the Keynote Luncheon in front of hundreds of industry leaders as well as 200 high school students from around Indiana who will be participating in "Logistics U," a day-long educational program focused on logistics opportunities. "Logistics U" was created to enable young people to learn about employment, education, internships and training opportunities in the logistics industry.
