Alabama State Port Authority Board Gets Three New Members

Gov. Robert Bentley has named Daryl Dewberry, Horace Horn and Ben Stimpson to the board of commissioners of the Alabama State Port Authority. All three appointments are for five-year terms effective August 1, 2014, and were confirmed by the Alabama State Senate in March.

Daryl Dewberry is vice president of District 20 of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International and has nearly 40 years of experience in the coal industry. He is also vice president of the Alabama AFL-CIO Executive Board, an executive board member of the Central Alabama Labor Federation, and a past member of the Alabama Department of Safety and Inspections for the State Mine Examiners’ Board.

Horace Horn is vice president of external affairs for PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, a provider of wholesale power in Alabama and northwest Florida. He is the past state director of the Farmers Home Administration (now the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Division), and has held leadership positions in Alabama agribusiness, including poultry production and organic garden products. Mr. Horn serves on the boards of the Energy Council, BBVA Bank, the Business Council of Alabama and the Southeast Federal Power Customers Inc.

Ben Stimpson is the owner and executive vice president of Scotch Gulf Lumber. He sits on a number of boards and commissions, including the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturer’s Association, the Southern Pine Council, the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau and the Alabama Wildlife Federation.

Established by legislation enacted in 2000, the Alabama State Port Authority owns and operates the state’s public deep-water facilities in the Port of Mobile. Its board consists of nine commissioners, each appointed by the governor with the consent of the state senate.

Ted Fick to Be Seattle’s New CEO

The Port of Seattle Commission has selected the next CEO for the Port of Seattle. Ted J. Fick will take the helm when current CEO Tay Yoshitani retires at the end of September.

Commissioners must vote on his appointment in public session. The vote is scheduled for their next meeting on September 11, when Mr. Fick will be introduced to the community.

"Ted has the right combination of skills and dynamic leadership to help the Port of Seattle thrive in the globally competitive environment ports face today. He brings the fresh perspective and breadth of experience we need to help our region generate new jobs and economic growth," said Commission Co-President Courtney Gregoire.

Mr. Fick has more than 25 years of leadership experience in major manufacturing and transportation organizations, including oversight of international operations. That includes working in the Puget Sound region’s manufacturing and industrial community, beginning at his family’s Tacoma-based company, Fick Foundry, and followed by many years in leadership positions at PACCAR, one of the Pacific Northwest’s primary manufacturers.

Most recently, he served as CEO of Polar Corporation, a $475 million trailer and component parts manufacturer in Minnesota. In that position, he oversaw three operating divisions, multiple manufacturing plants, and a workforce of more than 2,000 represented and non-represented employees.

He will begin work on September 29, 2014.
