Corpus Christi: ISO 14001 Certification Renewed for the Seventh Consecutive Year

Port Corpus Christi completed an annual surveillance audit of its Environmental Management System (EMS) in July. The audit found no major non-conformances and accordingly the ISO 14001 certification has been continued for another year.

Port Corpus Christi has an EMS in place at its public cargo docks, the maintenance facility and  bulk terminal. The EMS is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of our operations and promoting environmental stewardship.

The foundation of the EMS program is the port’s environmental policy, which includes the following 4 C’s or four commitments: (1) compliance with applicable rules and regulations; (2) commitment to pollution prevention; (3) continual improvement, and (4) communicating performance to the community.

During the past year, the port experienced a 33 percent reduction in spills (including no reportable spills), purchased 10 percent (or 760,000 kilowatt hours) of its electrical power from green energy sources, cut water consumption by 1.2 million gallon, and recycled 194,000 pounds of material.

"Environmental stewardship is a cornerstone of the port's mission. We continuously aspire to balance our region's abundant resources with the vibrant commerce that serves the Coastal Bend," said Port Commission Chair Judy Hawley. "The standard of excellence recognized by our seventh year as ISO 14001 certification is affirmation on is affirmation of the diligence of our employees and port users."
