Named for South American liberator Simon Bolivar, Puerto Bolívar is located the municipality of Machala in Ecuador’s El Oro province, about 74 miles due south of Guayaquil and 297 miles from the nation’s capital, Quito. Facilities include a finger pier with a 130-meter/427-foot long berth on either side, a marginal wharf with 360 linear meters/1,181 feet of berthing, a 27,795-square-meter/299,183-square-foot container yard, and various warehouses and storage areas. Mean lower water depths are 10.5 meters/34.5 feet in the main shipping channel and 12.5 meters at the berths. Traffic in 2011 consisted of 2.1 million metric tons of cargo (including 1.9 million tons of bananas), 55,878 container TEUs and 380 ship calls.
