Lake Charles: Official Opening of Harbor Police Department Security Center

The Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District hosted a Maritime Day Celebration with a dedication ceremony and reception for its new harbor police department (HPD) security center.

Said Port Executive Director William Rase: "The opening of the new Harbor Police Department Security Center represents the completion of the entire City Docks’ entrance plaza project, which includes the new main gate at the intersection of Marine and Sallier streets. The old facility was no longer sufficient for our present-day needs."

The center creates a hub for the port’s harbor police and security operations and monitors the port’s properties and the Calcasieu River Ship Channel. The facility also includes an emergency operations center and helps increase safety on port property.

The $2.2 million HPD Center was financed with an approximately $1.5 million federal Port Security Grant, with the balance coming from port funds. The center houses the port’s security receivers (such as video, alarms, radar, communications, and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminals) and other related security activities.

The new plaza is part of the port’s $275 million capital improvements program.

The harbor police force consists of 16 sworn officers and 10 contract security officers. Major David Wagner is the chief.
