Port People: Long Beach, Port Angeles, Prince Rupert

The Long Beach City Council recently approved the appointment of longtime Long Beach City College executive Lou Anne Bynum to the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, the five-member governing body of the Port of Long BeachPort of Port Angeles Executive Director Ken O’Hollaren has promoted Finance Director Karen Goschen to deputy executive director. Kenneth Clayton, P.Eng., has joined the board of directors of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

College Executive Joins Long Beach Harbor Commission 

The Long Beach City Council recently approved the appointment of longtime Long Beach City College executive Lou Anne Bynum to the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, the five-member governing body of the Port of Long Beach.

She was appointed by Mayor Bob Foster to fill the seat left vacant last November by the departure of Thomas Fields. The unexpired term will end June 2015.

Ms. Bynum is executive vice president of college advancement and economic development at Long Beach City College, where she previously served as vice president and administrative dean.

Also active in civic and community affairs, she is a board member for the Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network, Downtown Long Beach Associates, St. Mary Medical Center Hospital Advisory Board, Memorial Medical Center Community Trustees, and the Advisory Board for the Los Angeles County BizFed Institute. In the past, she has served as chair of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, vice chair of the Long Beach Economic Development Commission and president of the Southern California International Business Association.

Her degrees include a bachelor’s in history from California State University, Long Beach, and a master’s in applied linguistics/TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from UCLA.

Harbor commissioners can be appointed to a maximum of two six-year terms and are compensated $100 per board meeting. Generally, there are two board meetings each month.

Port Angeles Promotes Goschen to Deputy Executive Director

Port of Port Angeles Executive Director Ken O’Hollaren has promoted Finance Director Karen Goschen to deputy executive director. In that role, she will exercise the executive director’s authority during his absence, while continuing her responsibilities as director of finance.

Ms. Goschen joined the port as director of finance in August 2012. She has held executive-level management positions in finance since 1998 and has been responsible for presenting financial and operational results to governing boards for both nonprofit and government entities. She has also worked in management consulting, focusing on process improvement, strategic planning and financial systems, and has taught college level business and finance courses.

Her degrees include a BS in accounting and finance from California State University and an MBA with a concentration in finance from the University of Colorado. She also studied law at the University of Colorado.

"We are very fortunate to have someone of Karen’s capabilities and experience on staff to assume this new role," said Mr. O’Hollaren, who pointed out her exceptional work towards improving the financial systems since joining the port.

Prince Rupert Port Authority Welcomes Kenneth Clayton to Board of Directors

Kenneth Clayton, P.Eng., has been appointed to the board of directors of the Prince Rupert Port Authority by Canadian Transport Minister Lisa Raitt in consultation with the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s User Nominating Committee.

Mr. Clayton has served since 1990 as president of Humphrey Construction, a general contracting firm whose work has included mining, port and fishing industry projects throughout North America. Before joining Humphrey Construction Ltd. as a project engineer, he worked for companies in the hydroelectric and concrete manufacturing fields. He is a graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Civil Engineering Program.

In 2010, he was made a Fellow of Engineers Canada, a distinction honoring individuals with noteworthy service to the engineering profession.

The port authority board consists of five directors – one appointed by the federal transport minister, one by the province of British Colombia, and three by the federal transport minister on the recommendation of the port users nominating committee. Directors may serve a maximum of three three-year terms.
