Massport has selected former Port Everglades business development director Michael Vanderbeek as its new deputy port director for sales and marketing. Paulo André de Castro Holanda, president of Companhia Docas do Ceara, the agency responsible for Fortaleza and other public ports in that Brazilian state, has been named Outstanding Federal Executive of Ceara of 2013. Former Nike attorney Daniel Blaufus has joined the Port of Portland, in Oregon, as general counsel.

Boston: Massport Names Vanderbeek Deputy Port Director for Sales & Marketing

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has selected Michael Vanderbeek as its new deputy port director for sales and marketing. Mr. Vanderbeek will be responsible for developing sales and marketing strategies and programs for the Port of Boston and Massport’s maritime facilities.

Mr. Vanderbeek will work with the Massport Maritime Department’s staff, internal and external partners and customers, transportation and cruise shipping industries, and the New England business community to implement plans to create, strengthen, and maintain services and volumes and achieve planned business development objectives. He will develop and implement marketing strategies to expand Massport’s cargo and cruise industry presence, create new revenue opportunities, and improve the competitiveness of the Port of Boston. Lastly, he will be responsible for overseeing staffing and budget issues for the maritime sales and marketing team.

Mr. Vanderbeek comes to Massport from Port Everglades, where he had been director of business development since July 2012. Earlier, he was manager of business development and manager of strategic planning for the Port of Long Beach.

Mr. Vanderbeek is a member of the Port Cities Working Group of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and AAPA’s Maritime Economic Development and Cruise committees.

He holds a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Southern California, where he also served as adjunct faculty. He graduated summa cum laude from Boise State University with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish.

"We have a lot of goals and challenges ahead and we need someone with a successful track-record and professional background like Michael’s to help us navigate the waters and achieve our goals."

Fortaleza: Ceara Port Company President Paulo André Holanda Accorded Academic Honors 

Paulo André de Castro Holanda, president of Companhia Docas do Ceara (CDC), the agency responsible for the public ports in that Brazilian state, has been named Outstanding Federal Executive of Ceara of 2013.

He was selected for the honor in an internet polling by the organization Promoções e Eventos of politicians, businessmen, and pundits in Ceara state.  Mr. Holanda joined CDC IN 2007 as director of infrastructure and port management. Since becoming president in 2010, he  has been responsible for restoring the growth of cargo traffic at the Port of Fortaleza. He also serves with the Latin American port delegation on the AAPA Board of Directors.

Before joining the port, Mr. Holanda worked for  the Central institute for Technolgical Education, the State University of Vale do Acaraú, and for the science and technology – secretariat for the states of Goiás and Ceará. As a fellow with the National Council of Technological and Scientific Development, he was involved in the coordination, supervision and development of technological vocational centers.

Former Nike Attorney Blaufus is Port of Portland’s New General Counsel

Former Nike attorney Daniel Blaufus has joined the Port of Portland (OR) as general counsel. Mr. Blaufus most recently served as senior vice president and general counsel at Borden Dairy Company in Dallas. From 2000 to 2010, he worked in various legal capacities at Nike, including emerging markets counsel, Americas regional counsel and assistant general counsel.

Mr. Blaufus began his legal career in 1993 at Tonkon Torp, LLP, in Portland. Before earning a Juris Doctor from Lewis and Clark Law School, he taught high school and middle school English and social studies and coached basketball and track in Oregon. He received a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Western Oregon University.

Active in the community, Mr. Blaufus is a founder and partner of Marathon Education Partners, a college scholarship organization focused on early intervention for children with significant financial need and academic potential. He has also received the Nike Community Involvement Award and the Bank of America Local Hero Award.

"Dan has the depth of experience and the outside perspective that position him well to serve the diverse needs of the port’s business lines and activities," said Port Executive Director Bill Wyatt. "His managerial and leadership skills will ensure our 15-member legal team maintains its high levels of strategic advice and counsel."
