Brazil: Port Cargo Reaches Record 931 Million Tons in 2013

A record 931 million metric tons of cargo moved through the the Brazilian port system in 2013, according to data compiled and reported by the national waterways agency, Agência Nacional de Transportes Aquaviários (ANTAQ). It was the fourth consecutive year of record tonnage and an increase of 2.9 percent, or 26.6 million tons, from 2012.

Total trade includes foreign, cabotage and "inland navigation" cargo handled at the nation’s 33 "organized ports" and 103 "private use terminals." Brazil’s waterborne trade tonnage exceeds that of every country in the Western Hemisphere except the United States.

Major cargo categories were iron ore, fuels, containerized goods, soybeans and soybean products, bauxite, corn, fertilizers, sugar, coal, steel, wood fiber, petroleum coke, wheat and organic chemicals.

The cabotage trades – that is cargo shipped by sea between Brazilian ports – increased 1.7 percent in 2013 to 138.7 million tons. With respect to foreign trade, exports amounted to 531.1 million tons ( 1.27 percent) and imports 152.1 million tons ( 5.0 percent).

An additional 78.6 million tons moved via Brazil’s inland waterway system, down 2.8 percent from 80.9 million tons in 2012.

Georgia Ports Reports January Gains for Containers, Cargo Tonnage

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) opened calendar year 2014 with a strong January, posting year-on-year increases of 12.5 percent in container volumes and 7.3 percent in cargo tonnage.

The GPA’s Garden City Container Terminal in the Port of Savannah moved 259,159 TEUs, up from 230,372 in January 2013.  Cargo shipments at GPA terminals statewide totaled 2.45 million short tons, an increase of 166,544 tons from last year.

In Brunswick, Colonel’s Island Terminal led GPA terminals to a 6.1 percent increase in automobile and heavy equipment units moved during the first seven months of the fiscal year that began July 1, 2013. Including Savannah’s Ocean Terminal, the GPA moved 386,070 units of roll-on/roll-off cargo, up by 22,044 units. Brunswick handled most of those moves, at 372,146 units from July through January.

"We are encouraged by the strong growth in January that continued a trend that began during the fourth quarter and are hopeful these volumes signal a strengthening U.S. and global economy," said GPA Executive Director Curtis J. Foltz

Port of Houston Authority Containers, Cargo Tonnage, Revenues Hit Record Levels in 2013

The Port of Houston Authority generated record container movement and cargo tonnage in 2013.

Record container throughput (1,950,071 TEUs) and an unprecedented 36 million short tons of cargo handled were primary contributors to the remarkable year. Improved grain and coal exports over the prior year enabled the port authority to post a 13-percent increase in bulk cargo to 11 million tons.

Port authority operating revenue reached an all-time high of $231 million, up 4 percent, or $8 million from 2012, giving the agency its fourth consecutive year of year-on-year increases.

"This is a benchmark we can all take pride in," said Port Authority Executive Director Roger Guenther. "It reflects positively on the efforts of port authority staff under the guidance of the port commission to increase the commerce moving through port facilities, bringing more jobs and economic opportunity to the region. It is important we continue making capital investments in our facilities to help meet the growing needs of global commerce."

The Port of Los Angeles reports container volume at its facilities totaled 685,0550 TEUs in January, an increase of 2.5 percent from 669,000 TEUs in January 2012. The port says the increase was due in part to shippers moving cargo in advance of the Chinese New Year, which this year fell on January 31.

In detail, the port’s January data show increases from a year ago of 6.7 percent for inbound loads to 360,037 TEUs and 1.7 percent for outbound loads to 161,938 TEUs. Empty container movements decreased 5.1 percent to 685,550 TEUs.
