Halifax Port Authority Releases Final Cruise Numbers for 2013

The Port of Halifax welcomed 134 vessel calls with 252,121 passengers onboard during the cruise season that began May 6 and ended October 31, 2013. The busiest day was October 8, with approximately 8,700 passengers. During the season, the port recognized long-time client Holland America Line by planting tulips in honor of the cruise ship operator’s 140th Anniversary and its 20 years of Halifax port calls.

"It was a fantastic cruise season this year," said Cathy McGrail, the port authority’s manager of cruise development. "All of our partner agencies, including vendors, tour operators and business owners, really came together to provide our cruise guests with a wonderful experience during their time in our beautiful city and our province."

"Cruise ship traffic is important for local tourism," said Lynn Ledwidge, director of marketing for Destination Halifax. "When the vessels are in port, it’s good for our land touring companies, restaurants, museums, galleries, attractions and our retail community. The unique range of product offering in the Halifax region has earned this port of call marquee status in Atlantic Canada. We have an excellent product to offer, and every cruise passenger who comes through our city is viewed as a potential repeat visitor to Nova Scotia."

Each year, the Halifax cruise industry contributes approximately C$50 million in direct spin-off expenditures for the local economy. The 2014 cruise season will begin in May.

Port Everglades Will Homeport Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas

The second in the cruise line’s new Quantum Class of ships, Anthem of the Seas is under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. Following its scheduled delivery in 2015, it will spend the summer in the European cruise market before debuting that fall in Port Everglades.
