Port Commissions: Everett, Jacksonville, Los Angeles

Real estate executive Glen Bachman was elected to the Everett Port Commission on November 5. Experienced foreign policy professional and author Nancy Soderberg has joined the JAXPORT Board of Directors, and Jacksonville City Council members also approved the mayor’s reappointment of immediate past Chairman James Citrano for a second term on the board. The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners held its first meeting November 21 with four of the five-member panel newly appointed by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Everett: Glen Bachman Elected to Port Commission

Real estate executive Glen Bachman was elected to the Everett Port Commission on November 5. He has served on the three-member commission as an interim appointee since September 10, after the resignation of Commissioner Michael HoffmannMr. Bachman, who ran uncontested, draws on more than 30 years of real estate experience, 24 of which have been with Kemper Development, as vice president of operations and administration for Bellevue Square, Lincoln Square and Bellevue Properties. 

"I'm honored to once again be selected to serve as a port commissioner, and this time by the citizens of Everett," Commissioner Bachman said. "By using my skills in real estate, finance and planning, I hope to work with the port management, the port commissioners and the public to guide and set policy to add value to the land, add jobs for our citizens and protect our environment.

Commissioner Bachman holds a bachelor's in marketing from Eastern Washington University, with continued studies in asset management. He has been a member of International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) for 24 years, and he was the ICSC Western States Director for Government Affairs and a board member of the Washington State Retail Association.

JAXPORT Welcomes New and Returning Board Members

Experienced foreign policy professional and author Nancy Soderberg has joined the JAXPORT Board of Directors following approval by the Jacksonville City Council of her appointment by Mayor Alvin Brown. Council members also approved the mayor’s reappointment of immediate past Chairman James Citrano for a second term on the board. Each will each serve four-year terms.

Ms. Soderberg is the president of the Connect U.S. Fund in Washington, D.C., a nongovernmental organization that leads and supports effective, collaborative advocacy with the aim of creating a just, sustainable and peaceful world. In addition, she is a Visiting Distinguished Scholar at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville and president and CEO of Soderberg Solutions, an international consulting firm.

Soderberg is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and she serves on the advisory board of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy and the Stanley Foundation. 

Mr. Citrano retired in 2013 as managing director of the Jacksonville office of CB Richard Ellis, a position he had held since 1997. Prior to joining CB Richard Ellis, he served as vice president of Gate Riverplace at Gate Petroleum. In a real estate management career spanning almost 40 years, he has also held senior management positions with St. Johns Place Development Company, The Haskell Company and J.A. Jones Construction Company. He is also a United States Marine Corps veteran. 

The port authority board consists of seven members – four appointed by the mayor of Jacksonville and three by the governor of Florida. Board members serve four-year terms and may be appointed to one additional term. 

The other board members are: Chairman John J. Falconetti, Treasurer Dr. John Allen Newman, Secretary Robert F. Spohrer and member Joe York. One seat is vacant.

Los Angeles: Newly Appointed Harbor Commission Meets for First Time

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners held its first meeting November 21 with four of the five-member panel newly appointed by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Three of the commissioners are harbor area residents. The harbor commission is expected to elect its president and vice president at the next board meeting on December 12.

"Spurring investment and creating job opportunities at our nation’s No. 1 port is critical to Los Angeles and the entire country," said Mayor Garcetti. "I’m looking to this panel to assure that the port remains the premier trade gateway in North America and continues to produce needed jobs here in Los Angeles." 

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners oversees the management and operation of the Port of Los Angeles. The five-member board is appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council. The commissioners serve five-year terms.

The five members of the newly seated board are: 
  • David Arian – A long-time San Pedro and Harbor area resident, Mr. Arian joined the Harbor Commission in 2010 and currently serves as vice president. He is president of the Harry Bridges Institute, a San Pedro-based, nonprofit dedicated to community organization. A longshoreman from 1965 to 2009, Mr. Arian was an active member and held numerous leadership positions in the International Longshore & Warehouse Union. In 2006, he served on the joint port advisory panel for the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach’s Clean Air Action Plan.
  • Patricia Castellanos – Commissioner Castellanos presently serves as deputy director of the L.A. Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE), an advocacy nonprofit organization focused on advancing economic development strategies that lead to better jobs and an improved environment. Previously, she served for six years as LAANE’s director of the Coalition for Clean and Safe Ports. Before joining LAANE, she was the harbor area director for former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. A resident of San Pedro, Commissioner Castellanos was named "Democrat of the Year" for Assembly District 54 by the Los Angeles Democratic Party and "Woman of the Year" by the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce in 2006.
  • Vilma Martinez – Commissioner Martinez most recently served as U.S. Ambassador to Argentina from 2009 to 2013, appointed by President Obama and the first woman to hold the position. Since 1982, she has been a law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson, where she has specialized in federal and state court commercial litigation, and equal employment opportunity and diversity policies for businesses. Prior to that, she was president and general counsel of the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), a litigation associate at a New York law firm and a staff attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She was a University of California regent for 15 years and served as its chairman from 1984 to 1986. She was also a President Clinton appointee to the Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations from 1994 to 1996. 
  • Anthony Pirozzi Jr. – Commissioner Pirozzi currently serves as the director of systems integration, test and launch organization at the Boeing Satellite Development Center in El Segundo (CA). He has worked for Boeing for 23 years, building and launching communication satellites. He is a member and past chairman of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce. He was president of Eastview Little League in San Pedro from 2009 to 2012, and he has been a columnist for the local San Pedro Today newspaper since 2009. Pirozzi is also active in local youth sports and theater.  
  • Edward Renwick – Commissioner Renwick is a partner at The Yucaipa Companies, LLC, a Los Angeles-based private investment firm. In addition, he co-founded and is chief executive officer of Raineth Holdings, a $40 million real estate investment fund. Prior to joining Yucaipa in 1999, he was a consultant at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and senior vice president of business development at the Chongqing Wanli Storage Battery Company in China. Commissioner Renwick holds a B.A. from Stanford University and a J.D. and M.P.P. from Harvard University.
