Argentia Port Signs Lease Agreement with Husky Oil Corporation

Argentia Management Authority Inc. (AMA) announced October 10 the signing of a lease with Husky Oil Operations Limited on 20 hectares/49.4 acres of waterfront property on the Argentia Northside Peninsula.

"With the signing of this lease, Husky and its partners are moving forward with plans to construct a unique graving dock facility at Argentia in support of its Wellhead Platform Project for the West White oil field, offshore Newfoundland," said AMA Chair Hedley Burge.  "The construction of this heavy industrial marine facility, and subsequently the construction of a Congreve Gravity Structure to support the Wellhead Platform Project, will create hundreds of jobs and business opportunities for the people and businesses of our region and through the province."

The excavation of the graving dock site at Argentia will cover a square-shaped area of more than 2 hectares/4.9 acres and down to a depth of 18 meters /59.1 feetbelow Mean Low Tide. The facility also will include a graving dock, enabling the facility to be used for other projects.

North Carolina Council of State Approves Wood Pellet Agreement for Port of Morehead City

The North Carolina Council of State earlier this month approved a deal allowing the construction of a wood pellet export facility at the Port of Morehead City. The same agreement with WoodFuels, LLC, had been previously approved by the board of directors of the North Carolina State Ports Authority (NCSPA).

Pursuant to its terms, WoodFuels would finance and build a $25 million export facility at the port to receive, store and load wood pellets for export to Europe for use as a renewable energy source.

The facility would receive its first pellets for shipment in late 2014. After the initial operational year, revenue will range between $1.2 million and $2 million annually. On average, this deal could generate port revenues amounting to $840,000 annually that would be reinvested in the Port of Morehead City. The ports authority expects the new business will support at least 150 direct and indirect jobs between the port and other North Carolina locations.

Earlier this year, the ports authority completed a deal with Enviva Holdings, LP, for the construction and operation of a similar facility at the Port of Wilmington. That facility is scheduled to open in early 2015.

Port Saint John Lands Second Global Container Connection

One of the world’s top global container lines is now providing weekly service through Port Saint John

Hapag-Lloyd is offering its services through Tropical Shipping. Port Saint John has been the Canadian home-base for Tropical’s container service for the past 12 years. Mediterranean Shipping Company began calling Saint John regularly in May 2012.

"This new partnership between Hapag-Lloyd and Tropical adds so much value for regional shippers and receivers," said Saint John Port Authority CEO Jim Quinn. "This arrangement will provide these businesses with another link to the global market. Tropical has long been an outstanding partner, and we’re pleased to see they’ve entered into this new collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd."
