Galveston Receives Quest for Quality Award

The Port of Galveston has been awarded Logistics Management magazine’s 2013 Quest for Quality Award in the Ports category. The port was evaluated based on these five criteria: performance, value, information technology, customer service and equipment/operations.

The awards are the culmination of a six-month research project conducted by Peerless Research Group (PRG). For three decades, the magazine’s Quest for Quality has been regarded in the transportation and logistics industry as the most important measure of customer satisfaction and performance excellence.

This year, Logistics Management had 6,179 logistics and supply chain decision makers place their vote. This six-month research undertaking resulted in nine lists featuring 129 transportation and logistics services provider organizations that have gone for the gold and achieved their mission of being designated "best of the best" by the readers of Logistic Management.

"What makes the Quest for Quality Awards stand out in the market is the fact that the winners are determined by the readers of Logistics Management – the buyers of logistics and transportation services who put these carriers and service providers to work around the clock and around globe," said Michael Levans, group editorial director of Peerless Media, LLC, the publisher of Logistics Management.

Hueneme Receives RICA Award, Welcomes Genesee & Wyoming as New Rail Partner

The Port of Hueneme was honored recently by the Railway Industrial Clearance Association (RICA) as 2012’s Most Improved Port. Founded in 1969, the Railway Industrial Clearance Association is dedicated to serving the heavy and dimensional transportation industry, cargos with large dimensions, excess weight or center of gravity or other unusual issues.

Port Commission President Jason Hodge commented: "We’re honored to have our efforts recognized by this national organization. Improving intermodal freight transportation has been one of our key areas of focus in reducing truck traffic by building a more sustainable intermodal business plan that works for all port stakeholders."

In other news, the 13-mile Ventura County Railway (VCRY), which, like the port, is owned by Oxnard Navigation District, is now operated by Genesee & Wyoming (G&W), which recently acquired the franchise from Rail America. G&W owns and operates short line and regional freight railroads in the United States, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Belgium, including rail service at 36 ports. The VCRY serves port customers as well the neighboring U.S. Navy Seabee base and is a key logistical link in the port’s auto trade.

"Auto import tonnage has increased the last two years by 20 percent and 12 percent, respectively, and we see enhanced rail opportunities with this growth," said Hueneme Port CEO Kristin Decas. "We remain very engaged in creating intermodal solutions utilizing rail by enhancing the partnership between Genesee & Wyoming and Union Pacific Railroad."
