AAPA has taken advantage of the quiet news cycle in Washington this month to work with national media outlets to raise awareness of the U.S. port industry and reinforce the "Seaports Deliver Prosperity" message. On August 6, AAPA President and CEO Kurt Nagle participated in a live broadcast of C-SPAN’s National Journal from the Port of Virginia. And on August 27-28, AAPA will partner with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New York Shipping Association to host an Influencer’s Roundtable and Media Port Tour.

C-SPAN's Aug. 6 Washington Journal Focuses on Ports

On August 6, Washington D.C.’s premier public affairs program, the Washington Journal – a daily live program of the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network (C-SPAN), which provides a forum for leading journalists and public policy makers to discuss key events and legislation – traveled to The Port of Virginia. The setting helped frame a discussion on the value and significance of ports.

Among the featured interviewees were AAPA President and CEO Kurt Nagle; Rodney Oliver, interim executive director of the Virginia Port Authority; Jeff Wassmer, chairman of the port’s Board of Commissioners; and U.S. Representatives Scott Rigell (R) and Bobby Scott (D), whose districts include parts of Norfolk. Topics included port infrastructure funding, port security, federal sequestration impacts, and the impact that U.S. ports have on the daily lives of all Americans.

PANYNJ and NYSA To Host Influencer's Roundtable and Port Tour

In cooperation with AAPA, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, together with the New York Shipping Association, on August 27-28 will host a pair of events on the New Jersey side of the sprawling bi-state port. With America’s trade volumes expected to quadruple after 2030, the 1½-day port industry awareness program is being offered to select media and federal policy "influencers" to give them a closer look at the infrastructure that moves the goods we all need and depend upon. The program will also focus on the challenges facing America’s ports as an estimated $46 billion federal investment gap by 2040 threatens the industry’s ability to deliver prosperity for millions.

The August 27 key influencers roundtable, "Seaports: The Big Picture," is an opportunity for media and industry experts to come together for an informal, off-the-record discussion about the critical issues threatening America’s seaports.

The guided port tour on August 28 is an opportunity for select media to explore the infrastructure, security and inside-the-gate issues that are impacting the East Coast’s largest volume container port, where fully one-third of all Eastern seaboard international cargo arrives and departs. It’s also an opportunity to hear from port authority and port association executives as to what’s being done, what’s planned and what’s lacking throughout the U.S. port industry.
