At the Port of Redwood City, cargo volume increased 13 percent in the recently ended fiscal year, thanks to an upturn in construction activity in the San Francisco Bay area. For the fourth year in a row, the Port of Tacoma was recently named a Green Supply Chain Partner by Inbound Logistics.

Redwood City Cargo Tonnage Jumps 13 Percent to Seven-Year High

An upturn in construction activity in the San Francisco Bay Area spurred a 13 percent increase in cargo volume at the Port of Redwood City during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013. As indicated in the attachment, the 12-month total, 1,493,190 metric tons, gave the port its best year since FY 2006. The port also experienced an increase in vessel traffic.

Imports of sand and aggregates alone accounted for 1,044,805 tons and an increase of 21 percent from FY 2011-12. These construction materials are supplied by Eagle Rock Aggregates from the Orca Quarry on Vancouver Island (BC) and are delivered to Redwood City by self-unloading bulk ships operated by Canadian Steamship Lines.

The aggregates trade more than compensated for a 2.0 percent drop (to 304,957 tons) in shredded scrap metal exported by port tenant Sims Metal Management. Other Redwood City port cargos in FY 2013 were imported gypsum (46,825 tons), imported gypsum (63,555 tons), imported bauxite (+18 percent) and domestically sourced sand (30,049 tons).

Tacoma Again Named Green Supply Chain Partner

The Port of Tacoma’s sustainability commitment has earned it an Inbound Logistics Green Supply Chain Partner honor for the fourth year running.

One of five U.S. ports selected, Tacoma was recognized for its efforts to reduce seaport-related air emissions through the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, retrofit lighting to save energy, and find innovative solutions to manage stormwater runoff. The trade magazine honored 75 organizations from various trade sectors, including ports, truckers, railroads, shipping lines, freight forwarders and air cargo carriers.

The complete list of honored partners is featured in the magazine's June issue at http://www.inboundlogistics.com.
