Hueneme Selects New Chief Operating Officer

Port CEO & Director Kristin Decas announced last week that John Demers, a newly retired naval officer, would be joining the Port of Hueneme staff as chief operations officer, beginning July 23.

"John comes to us with a strong background in operations and logistics in his over 20 years of service with the United States Navy," said Ms. Decas. "During his military tenure, he held senior level officer positions directing diverse cargo handling operations, construction projects, IT activities, training, administration and overall logistics."

A graduate of the U.S. Army War College with a master’s degree in Strategic Studies, Mr. Demers, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, served as a military liaison officer to the Iraqi Government during operation Iraqi Freedom. He completed two tours of duty at Naval Base Ventura County, first with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three and later with the Fifth Navy Expeditionary Logistics Regiment. He also served as a chief staff officer and fleet operations officer before becoming deputy assistant chief of staff at the U.S. Fifth Fleet, the post he held at the time of his retirement.

Oakland Welcomes New Commissioner Michael Colbruno

Michael Colbruno is newest member of the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners. Nominated by Mayor Jean Quan and confirmed by the Oakland City Council in May, he attended his first board meeting on July 11.

Commissioner Colbruno is a partner in the Milo Group of California, a public affairs firm, and managing member of Iris Outdoor, a billboard advertising firm. From 1999 to 2010, he served as vice president of government affairs for Clear Channel Outdoor/Northern California and before that worked as a legislative director and chief-of-staff in the San Francisco Mayor’s office, San Francisco Board of Supervisors and California State Legislature. Additionally, he was appointed by three successive Oakland mayors to serve on the City’s Planning Commission.

The seven-member board is the governing authority of the Port Oakland. Members are appointed to four year terms by the mayor with the consent of the city council and receive no compensation for their services.
