AAPA’s education and training programs continue to highlight best practices and provide networking opportunities for the port industry. The Security Seminar begins on July 17, and presentations from the recent Maritime Economic Development Workshop are available on AAPA’s website. AAPA’s Maritime Economic Development Committee also announced the availability of three papers developed by its Real Estate Best Practices Work Group. The Exhibit Hall at AAPA’s Annual Convention in Orlando, October 13-17, is already two-thirds full so don’t delay if you wish to participate.

Security Seminar Begins on July 17
It’s not too late to plan to attend AAPA’s well-attended Port Security Seminar & Expo, which will be held July 17-19 in Baltimore. This event brings together security professionals from throughout the port industry and will address key security and safety challenges confronting public seaports.

Three MEDC Real Estate Work Group Reports Posted To AAPA Website
The Real Estate Best Practices Work Group, which is chaired by Port of Los Angeles Deputy Executive Director Kathryn McDermott and associated with AAPA’s Maritime Economic Development Committee, has developed three reports that will likely be of interest to anyone involved in developing, leasing, selling, managing or marketing port real estate.

The first is a 34-page white paper on port property economic development best practices. (Click here to access.) Its purpose is to highlight economic development-oriented practices from representative landlord ports across the continental United States. Team members involved in creating this the report include Michael Vanderbeek with Port Everglades; Jill Morgan with Marisolve, LLC; Ian Lamont with The Lamont Group, LLC; Tim Golden, an independent communications consultant formerly with the Port of Los Angeles; Eutimio Gomez with the Port of Los Angeles; and Jing Li, formerly with the Port of Long Beach and now a consultant with the Port Cities program at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The second is also white paper, this one a seven-pager on port property lease structures. (Click here to access.) The objective was to present a compendium of current port policies, practices and lease provisions as a reference for AAPA members. Oversight on and guidance of the project was provided by the work group’s Lease Structure Subgroup, including Port of Los Angeles’ Kathryn McDermott; Jay Stewart with the Port of Tacoma; Steve Hagar with the Port of Everett; and Spencer Stewart, a consultant in the Government Services Group at Yardi Systems Inc.

The third is a 69-page port property management research paper, developed by Franc J. Pigna, managing director for Aegir LLC Port Property Advisers. (Click here to access.) This report surveys a cross section of ports geographically and functionally to identify current port management viewpoints on property assets. It also reviews many of the port property asset challenges faced by ports and discusses areas for further research and study.
