Harris County Commissioners Court on June 25 appointed long-time labor leader Clyde Fitzgerald to the Houston Port Commission

The seven-member commission is the governing body of the Port of Houston Authority. Two members are appointed by the City of Houston, two by the Harris County Commissioners Court, one by the Harris County Mayors & Councils Association, one by the City of Pasadena, and the chairman jointly by the city and the county commissioner court. Commissioners serve without compensation for terms of two years each.

Mr. Fitzgerald, who began working on the wharves of the Houston Ship Channel at the age of 16, takes the seat of former Port Commissioner Jim Fonteno, who submitted his resignation to Commissioners Court in April.

The new commissioner is a 50-year veteran of the Houston waterfront and currently president of the South Atlantic & Gulf Coast District of the International Longshoremen's Association. He joined his father on the docks in 1959 and later served as president of ILA Local 28 for 20 years.

In 1991, he was elected secretary-treasurer of the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District, which stretches from North Carolina to Brownsville, Texas. In 2002, he was elected district president and in July 2010, was re-elected to that position without opposition for another four-year term. Mr. Fitzgerald also serves as vice president of the International ILA organization and is a member of its executive council.

At the swearing-in ceremony are, from left, Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Vickie Fitzgerald, Port Commissioner Clyde Fitzgerald and Port Commission Chairman Janiece Longoria.
