Toronto Port Authority Renews Commitment to Green Electricity

Toronto Port Authority (TPA) will continue to choose 100 percent green electricity for its facilities with Bullfrog Power®, Canada’s 100 percent green energy provider. Reaffirming its mandate as a waterfront steward, TPA has committed to choosing renewable energy to reduce its environmental impact.

TPA has chosen green energy since 2010 and is among the largest buyers of renewable energy in Canada, purchasing 13,745 MWh (megawatt hours) a year for consumption by its facilities, including Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the Port of Toronto and Outer Harbour Marina.

TPA’s green energy commitment complements its broader sustainability strategy, which includes keeping the harbor clean by removing an average of 400 metric tons of debris, silt and driftwood from the waterfront every year, and working closely with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority on a fish habitat at Tommy Thompson Park.

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power’s generators inject renewable electricity onto the grid to match the amount of power TPA uses. Bullfrog’s electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program – instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear. Bullfrog Power uses the collective demand of its customers to support the development of green energy projects in Canada.
