Redwood City Hosts New Self Unloading Ship

CSL Tecumseh, a technologically-advanced bulk carrier, paid a maiden voyage call to the Port of Redwood City on May 29. Named for a Shawnee war chief, Tecumseh brought 40,000 tons of construction aggregates from the Orca Quarry in British Columbia. The material was delivered to port tenant Cemex Aggregates for ultimate distribution to ready-mix concrete plants.

CSL Tecumseh and The Rt. Hon. Paul E. Martin, which made its first voyage to Redwood City last November, are Trillium Class self-unloading Panamax vessels, owned and operated by CSL International, a division of The CSL Group.

Trillium class vessels are equipped with that dust suppression gear, including feeder gates, boom dust enclosures, dust collectors and a foam spray dust suppression system. According to CSL, the new ships meet or exceed compliance with current and anticipated environmental regulations, from reductions in NOx, Sox, and other air emissions, to fuel efficiency and waste and pollution management.

"Together these two ships are planning to bring millions of tons of high quality construction aggregates from British Columbia to the three ports in the San Francisco Bay Area – Port of Redwood City, Port of Richmond and Port of San Francisco," said Port Executive Director Michael J. Giari. "With increased construction, these materials are vital for ready-mix concrete plants in the Greater Bay Area."

These ships face serious navigation restrictions at the Port of Redwood City because its authorized depth of 30 feet is down to 27 feet, which limits their transportation efficiency and increases the cost of this construction material, Mr. Giari said. He noted that these ships often must wait for high tide and carry less than full loads because of the draft restrictions.

Delivered in 2013, CSL Tecumseh, the 71,405 dwt, self-discharging Panamax-size vessel can fully offload its cargo within 24 hours.
