For the first time in the history of the AAPA Communications Awards Program, the Georgia Ports Authority will be honored with the Dan Maynard Communications Award for Overall Excellence. This "traveling" award is presented each year at AAPA’s Annual Convention to the port that earns the most award points in the competition. As a result of the judging, 28 entries from 14 ports earned an Award of Excellence, while 52 entries from 18 ports earned an Award of Distinction, and 19 entries from seven ports earned Awards of Merit.

The 2013 AAPA Communications Awards Program, which had a deadline for entries of May 1, received submissions from 28 AAPA-member port authorities in Canada, the Caribbean and the United States. All AAPA member ports throughout the Western Hemisphere are eligible and encouraged to enter. When the judging was completed, a total of 99 entries scored high enough to receive an Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction or Award of Merit.

The winning entries have been posted on the AAPA website. The winners will be recognized during the awards luncheon at AAPA’s 102nd Annual Convention in Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday, October 16. Now in its 46th year, AAPA’s communications competition utilized 36 professional public relations practitioners from the Washington, D.C., area who cumulatively spent more than 144 hours over a period of two weeks judging the 15 classifications of entries, ranging from advertisements and periodicals to videos and websites.
