The annual general meeting on May 16 of the Trois-Rivières Port Authority (TRPA) was an opportunity to look back on the highlights of 2012. The year also marked the Port of Trois-Rivières’ 130th anniversary.

On May 17, 1882, the federal government created the Trois-Rivières Harbour Commission to ensure the development of the port. The commission was succeeded by other management structures until the TRPA was created in 1999. The anniversary was celebrated with an open house that allowed more than 3,200 citizens of Trois-Rivières to tour the port.

Operating revenues for the TRPA rose from $5.8 million in 2011 to $6.0 million in 2012, while net profit remained unchanged at $2.0 million. Cargo throughput reached 3.3 million metric tons, about the same as in 2011. New business in recent years has included steel and wind towers.

During 2012, the TRPA continued to improve its information systems, signage throughout the port facilities, upgrade the rail network, and preparatory work for Phase II of its On Course for 2020 strategic initiative.

The collaboration between the TRPA and Tourisme Trois-Rivières bore fruit in September 2012 when the port welcomed its first international cruise ships, the Balmoral and the Quest for Adventure.

The port authority’s management team supports various causes and partcipates organizations such as the Chambre de commerce et d’industries de Trois-Rivières, the Regional health Foundation of Trois-Rivières, the Musée de la Culture populaire foundation and the Club Richelieu.
