AAPA conducted its Port Technology Seminar and Vendor Gallery May 14-16 in Jacksonville, Fla. Organized by the association’s Information Technology Committee, the seminar touched on a wide variety of subjects related to the use of technology in and around ports. Committee Chair Doug Albrecht of the Port of Long Beach, along with First Vice Chair April Danos of Port Fourchon and Second Vice Chair Lance Kaneshiro of the Port of Los Angeles, kicked off the seminar with a discussion of IT strategic planning and provided a valuable snapshot of the industry.

Subsequent sessions touched on the role of technology in physical security, document retention and legal issues, technology in port operations and Customs and Border Protection’s Automated Commercial Environment – ACE-M1. An especially engaging panel on cyber security focused on trends in hacking and policy implications for the port industry. Neil Kutchera of Port Everglades connected his iPhone to the A/V equipment and showcased the functionality of his CruiseSchedule app during a session on mobility. The Jacksonville Port Authority hosted a welcome reception. Go to the AAPA website to view the seminar presentations.
