Marine Board Seeking Nominations for Members

The Marine Board of the National Research Council is seeking nominations for new members to be appointed to three-year terms that would commence on November 1, 2013. The Marine Board serves the nation and its sponsoring federal agencies by providing technical and policy evaluations and advice.  

Marine Board members are appointed by the governing board of the National Research Council based on experience and expertise in areas of current interest to the board and its sponsors. Members serve without compensation in the national interest. The 20-member board meets twice a year.  

Members represent a broad diversity of background, expertise, experience and subject knowledge. The topics/issues of highest current interest include: Arctic shipping, safety in offshore operations, risk assessment and risk management, port and maritime security, inland and coastal shipping, environmental effects of marine transportation and port operations, and shipping safety.

There will be two board vacancies in 2013. Of particular interest are candidates with expertise in the following areas: 
  • Ferry/Passenger Vessel Transportation
  • Port and Terminal Operations and Management
  • Inland Waterways
  • Naval Engineering
To nominate individuals for consideration by the selection committee, please complete the nomination form and return it to the Marine Board Staff Director on or before June 30, 2013.
