Port Metro Vancouver has been named to the 2012 "Green 30" list of Canadian organizations whose employees are most positive about their record on environmental stewardship. The list, compiled by Aon Hewitt, is based on employee opinion data collected as part of the annual Best Employers in Canada study and Best Small and Medium Employers study. More than 190,000 employees and 2,500 leaders in 280 organizations participated in the 2013 edition of these studies.

"We are very honored to be named to the Green 30 list, as it recognizes our employees’ support of the sustainability and environmental programs that we have been implementing," said Darrell Desjardin, the port authority’s director of environmental programs. "We have worked very hard as an organization to reduce our environmental footprint, and this is an accomplishment we can all take pride in."

Cited in the Green 30 list were the Port Metro Vancouver’s successful waste-management program and sustainable procurement guidelines. In addition, the port has been improving sustainability practices within the organization through LEED gold certification for building design, reducing air emissions and energy use, and encouraging sustainable transportation by employees.

Port Metro Vancouver is also addressing air quality and other environmental concerns, port-wide through initiatives such as shore power for cruise ships, the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, a container truck licensing system and the port authority’s EcoAction program.
