Three cruise ships carrying more than 5,400 passengers docked at the Port of San Diego on May 7. Celebrity Solstice and the Oceania Regatta were making inaugural visits San Diego. At 1,041 feet, the Solstice is the longest cruise ship to call the Southern California port. The third visitor was Holland America's Zuiderdam.

According to the port, each cruise that begins and ends its voyage in San Diego has an economic impact of $2 million resulting from passenger spending, as well as refueling, vessel maintenance and restocking of supplies.

The port received 87 cruise ship calls in 2012 and is expecting 77 in 2013. That is well below the 255 received in the peak year of 2008. The port anticipates that the cruise business will begin to recover in 2015 or 2016.
