North Carolina: Maersk Expands Wilmington/Latin America Service

Maersk Line is adding a third vessel and port calls in Panama and Costa Rica to its weekly South Atlantic Express (SAE) service between North Carolina’s Port of Wilmington and Central America. 

Wilmington port users now have direct access to the ports of Manzanillo, Panama, and Limón/Moin, Costa Rica, as well as Puerto Cortés, Honduras, and Santo Tomás, Guatemala. Transshipment options to Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Trinidad & Tobago are available via Manzanillo. Over-the-road service to El Salvador and Nicaragua is available from Puerto Cortés and Santo Tomás.

Maersk has provided weekly service between Wilmington and Honduras and Guatemala for four years. First quarter 2013 volumes were up 24 percent from first quarter 2010, according to the North Carolina State Ports Authority. The company has a regional office in Charlotte.

"The Maersk SAE service at the Port of Wilmington largely supports North Carolina’s textile and apparel industries,” said Jeff Miles, the ports authority’s acting executive director, "and is helping to sustain the jobs of thousands of North Carolina workers in these and related industries.
