The first of two tunnel boring machines for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Central Subway Project arrived April 22 at the Port of San Francisco’s Pier 80 Omni Terminal aboard the M/V Aggersborg.

The machines be used in the construction of so-called Central Subway project, an extension of the city’s Muni Metro light rail system. More specifically, they will excavate the subway tunnels from South of Market to the Chinatown and North Beach areas of metropolitan San Francisco. The first, named "Mom Chung,” will bore the northbound tunnel, while "Big Alma,” which has yet to be delivered, will bore the southbound tunnel. The tunnel borers were designed by The Robbins Company of Solon (OH) and manufactured at a plant in Guangzhou, China.

Pier 80 specializes in non-containerized breakbulk and project cargo like the tunnel boring machines. The terminal is located three miles from the excavation site, where the machine components will be trucked for final assembly.
