The Port of Hueneme celebrated Earth Day on April 22 by unveiling an "Environmental Management Framework,” which provides setting strategic direction for the implementation of action plans pertaining to air, water, marine resources, soil and sediments, energy and climate change. The framework’s goals include the creation of an ethic of environmental sustainability and greater community and stakeholder engagement. The port held a tree planting ceremony to honor Earth Day and the launching of its environmental management framework.

As part of its Earth Day celebration the port commissioners also adopted a resolution aimed at making the port a strategic hub in the developing American Marine Highway. The port plans to explore incentive based programs, port pairing opportunities and federal initiatives being developed by the U.S. Maritime Administration to advance this opportunity.

These actions are the latest in a series of steps the port has taken to reduce emissions from vessels and trucks and mitigate the port’s environmental footprint. Other environmental initiatives the port is actively pursuing include the electrification of Wharf 1, allowing ships to plug into shore side power. The port also has replaced its fleet of gasoline powered work vehicles with propane fueled trucks and installed 30 new stainless steel storm drain filters.

"We take our role as environmental leaders very seriously,” said Port CEO Kristin Decas. "We have a strong track record and are taking major strides forward with the adoption of our Environmental Management Framework. We are not just writing policy, we are implementing it as demonstrated with our shoreside power project and the adoption of our resolution on greener movement of freight along our nation’s marine highways.”
