Halifax Port Authority Wins Federal Funding for Intelligent Transportation Systems

The Government of Canada is contributing funding for new technology development at the Port of Halifax. The total cost of the two Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is estimated at C$660,000, with the federal government contributing up to C$330,000 under the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program. The Halifax Port Authority is also contributing C$330,000 towards the completion of these projects.

With larger ships accessing the harbor, the port authority sees a need to continuously monitor vessel clearances under each of the harbor bridges. The upgrading and enhancing of the bridge air gap system will enable the port to precisely measure the ship clearance.

The port authority predicts "these investments will ultimately help reduce levels of emissions and fuel usage and ensure the safety of the bridges and will also result in increased efficiency and safety for port users” and give port operators and shippers "confidence in the ability of ships to transit beneath the bridge, preventing delays in accessing and leaving the port.” Under the ITS Strategic Plan for Canada, En Route to Intelligent Mobility, the government committed to advancing the development and deployment of innovative technologies nationwide. To date, about 200 technology projects have received funding totaling more than C$30 million under this plan.
