Ever wonder or get asked who owns the infrastructure at America’s seaports? Seaports are critical economic lifelines that rely on connecting transportation infrastructure to deliver prosperity.

While there’s no "one size fits all” model for all seaports, one thing is clear ... all ports make significant investments in both infrastructure improvements and modernization within their gates. Outside the gates and port jurisdictions, there may be navigation channels, roads, bridges, tunnels and rail lines. For the most part, port authorities and their private-sector partners are responsible for funding capital improvements to their own facilities (with occasional assistance through government grants and cost-sharing). However, they typically aren't responsible for the connections leading to their facilities – outside the gate.

To help identify the responsible entities and the funding gaps for each of the various transportation connections with ports, AAPA has developed an infographic, "Endangered Seaports: The Big Picture.” It shows the challenges America’s ports face in facilitating the movement of goods.
