The Port of Los Angeles is in its final stretch of planning and preparation to host the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) 28th World Ports Conference, May 6-10 at the JW Marriott hotel and conference facility at LA LIVE in downtown Los Angeles.

This biennial conference will cover an array of economic, security, logistics and environmental challenges and trends confronting ports worldwide.

Among the Conference Agenda highlights are keynotes by Capt. Richard Phillips (Ret.), taken hostage by Somali Pirates in 2009, and noted ocean explorer Don Walsh discussing emerging maritime trade routes through the Arctic Ocean.

Committee and conference session topics include updates on maritime piracy policy and related security measures, best practices in port finance, the emergence of LNG-powered vessels and handling/transport, planning for extreme weather events, lessons learned from recent natural catastrophes, developments in Port Community System technology, port trucking logistics, "Zero Emissions” strategies, cruise business challenges, and a forum on women in the port and maritime industries.

"We are pleased to bring this global forum to Los Angeles and encourage professionals here and across the U.S. to consider attending for all the information, networking and business development benefits the event provides,” said Geraldine Knatz, IAPH president and executive director at the Port of Los Angeles, adding that non-IAPH member ports attending the conference will be extended a free one-year membership in the organization.

The IAPH and AAPA have held a longstanding working relationship. According to the IAPH, its member ports handle more than 60 percent of the world's seaborne trade, nearly 80 percent of its containerized cargo and include many its largest ports.
