A Spanish company, Grup TCB of Barcelona, has been selected to develop and operates the new Puerto Quetzal Container Terminal (TCQ) in Puerto Quetzal on Guatemala’s Pacific coast. As part of its 25-year concession agreement, which includes an option for renewal, the company will invest $250 million in new infrastructure.

Development of TCQ will be implemented in two phases. In phase one, the company will invest $120 million to build 300 metres of pier with a depth of 12.5 metres yard area of 13 hectares, and annual throughput capacity of 330,000 TEUs. Phase two envisions expansion of the yard to 21 hectares, extension of the pier to 540 meters, berth deepening to 14 meters and boosting annual throughput capacity to 700,000 TEUs. The terminal will be equipped with four STS gantry cranes, a mobile harbour crane and 12 RTGs.

Opened in 1983, Puerto Quetzal is Guatemala’s second largest container port, after Santo Tomas de Castilla, with TEU throughput of 251,034 in 2010, 363,684 in 2011 and 150,799 during the first six months of 2012.

Grup TCB now operates container terminals in Buenaventura (Colombia), Paranaguá (Brazil), Havana (Cuba) and Progreso (Mexico), as well as in Turkey and Spain.

"To incorporate this port in Guatemala to our portfolio will allow us to expand our business with large shipping companies in East Asia and the U.S. West Coast,” said Grup TCB CEO Xavier Soucheiron. "We are very satisfied with this agreement, which represents a further step in our consolidation as a global leader in container terminals and efficient management of port infrastructure.
