About $10 million in Mississippi state general obligation bonds have been earmarked for the construction of a wood pellet exporting facility at the Port of Pascagoula. The funds are contained in a $196 million state bond bill approved April 1 by the Mississippi House and Senate and now awaiting the expected approval of Gov. Phil Bryant.

As reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald, the facility will be built in the Bayou Casotte area of the port. It will be equipped with a conveyor system, storage silos, an unloading facility for trucks and rail cars, and a ship loader. Total estimated cost is between $28 million and $30 million, with the balance to be covered by the port and private sector terminal operators.

"There are several entities developing wood pellet manufacturing facilities around the state that will ship to European utility companies," Port Director Mark McAndrews told Gulflive.com. "It's a good opportunity for the state because we have a very good supply of wood here. What has not been here is a way to get it to market."

The new terminal will provide the critical supply chain link.
