The Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) is the recipient of a Horizon Utilities Energy Excellence Award for retrofitting the lighting of a multi-tenanted warehouse with more than 325,000 square feet of storage and office space.

Funding came from HPA’s ongoing Green Initiatives program, which sets aside money for projects that reduce energy consumption, and from the Ontario Power Authority’s saveONenergy incentive program. Horizon Utilities assisted HPA throughout the process by providing technical advice and program information. The retrofit involves the ongoing replacement of 1,200 400-watt sodium-vapor light fixtures with high-efficiency light fixtures and motion sensors. When complete, the retrofit is expected to save approximately 940,000 kWh annually and pay for itself within a year.

"The project has delivered great results for us and for our tenants,” said HPA President and CEO Bruce Wood. "Environmental responsibility is one of our primary guiding principles, and we are very pleased when we can save energy, save money, and make our tenants happy – all at the same time.”
