The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reports its facilities statewide handled 2.27 million short tons of cargo in February, an increase of 6.9 percent, or 147,650 tons, from February 2012.

A standout performer was the GPA’s Colonel’s Island Terminal in the Port of Brunswick, where shipments of machinery and vehicles jumped 30.4 percent to 50,622 units. Through February of the fiscal year that began last July 1, volume totaled 415,730 units, up 21 percent from the comparable period of FY 2011-12.

"Increased roll-on/roll-off cargo among the 21 car manufacturers we serve indicates an improving market for auto sales,” said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. "Our exports of Ford, GM and Toyota, as well as luxury brands Mercedes and BMW, support car-making jobs across the southern U.S.

Brunswick also experienced phenomenal growth in bulk cargo, up 282 percent in February to 124,028 tons and 550 percent for the fiscal year to 800,500 tons.

At Savannah, cargo rose 2.3 percent in February to more than 2.0 million tons. Container throughput reached 242,425 TEUs, a 4.9 percent increase from the preceding month and 2.3 percent higher than February 2012.

"In the fourth quarter, we expect to see further growth in container traffic, both in the wake of successful labor contract negotiations and as the nation’s economic recovery continues,” said Mr. Foltz.
