Virginia Port Container Traffic Upswing Continues into FebruaryPrint this Article | Send to Colleague The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) reports container throughput at its Hampton Roads maritime terminals posted their 13th consecutive month of year-on-year growth in February with a 7.9 percent increase from February 2012 to 169,390 TEUs. Containerized cargo also increased, by 7.1 percent to 1,416,350 short tons.
"Though February isn’t normally a high-volume month, this was the second best February in our history in terms of TEUs and general cargo tonnage,” said Rodney W. Oliver, PPM®, the VPA's interim executive director. "Our rail containers were up 17 percent for the month and almost 14 percent for the calendar year. I’m optimistic about what lies ahead given the early-season success we’ve had.”
During February as well, containers shipped in and out of the port by rail and between Hampton Roads and Richmond via the 64 Express barge service jumped by 11.4 percent to 4,084. Other February data reported by the VPA point to declines of 6.0 percent in ship calls, 48.4 percent in vehicle units, and 6.0 percent in container volume at the Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal.
