AAPA’s Public and Government Relations Workshop, held in Los Angeles February 21-22 and hosted by the Port of Los Angeles, focused on managing communications in disaster and business crisis situations, with special emphasis on executive personnel and political dilemmas that could potentially undermine the confidence that port constituencies have in a port authority and its leaders. More than 70 registrants and speakers from all four AAPA geographic delegations (Canada, U.S., Caribbean and Latin America) participated in this engaging program, which included industry experts and port communications and government relations staff describing methods they have used and recommend for dealing with stressful and potentially confidence-eroding situations.

In addition to presenters on everything from natural disasters to community protests, the program included a half-day, guided interactive component by the two principals of SAE Communications, which gave workshop participants opportunities to demonstrate how they would manage six different crisis-of-confidence type scenarios, ranging from port management malfeasance and financial improprieties, to a concessionaire service issue that threatens to halt port operations.
