The Port of Milwaukee in 2012 experienced a 34.5 percent in cargo tonnage bound to and from foreign ports via the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The year-end total of 210,406 metric tons included imported steel for local use locally and large finished goods shipped to markets around the world.

The Port of Milwaukee serves businesses in our region by providing cost effective ways to move raw materials and finished goods,” said Port Operations and Trade Director Paul Vornholt. “An increase in this measure of foreign trade suggests both positive economic trends and a greater appreciation of what the Port of Milwaukee offers.

In 2012, for the first time in decades, Milwaukee loaded U.S. flagged cargo vessels with locally made goods for overseas export – the Maersk-Illinois and BBC Houston carrying P&H mining shovels manufactured in Milwaukee and destined for Siberia.

Port cargo tonnage overall declined in 2012, a direct result, the port says, of reduced volumes of salt and coal caused by mild winter weather.
